How do I install a Lightweight Desktop
Environment
This is what Unity Desktop looks. I have not used Unity
Desktop Environment a lot, so can’t much say on this. The only reason, I’m
switching to Kubuntu is because, I definitely feel like Unity Desktop
Environment is slow. I had similar performance issue earlier about a year back.
I’m will be using this desktop specifically for Ruby and Rails projects.
This link “What kinds of desktop environments and shells are
available?”covers most of the currently available Ubuntu Desktop
Environment. I have used xfce and kubuntu earlier, so I would rather stick to
these two option for now.

Solution is to install ‘Guest Additions for VirtualBox
Manager”.
Steps for Ubuntu
Unity Desktop :
1.
If this is the first time you are doing this activity,
on you virtual machine window : Device -> Install Guest addition. This will
create an icon on the left panel of the desktop named = “VBOXADDITIONS.4.3.XXX”
2.
Go to left panel of your Ubuntu Unity Desktop
3.
Scroll down / browse through the left panel (Initially
it might not be visible due to screen size)
4.
You should find a disc image file named =
“VBOXADDITIONS.4.3.XXX”
5.
Right click on this disc image and choose the option to
run this file
6.
Press Return to close the window
7.
Restart your virtual machine
8.
You are all set. You should see that your Ubuntu is
Installed in full window.
For the first time you will install ubuntu and do these

starts working then.
